WI PRESS REPORT Thurs 10th September 2015

Press Report – Norbury & District WI

On Thursday, 10th September our meeting coincided with our inaugural meeting at our new village hall and secondly, in celebration of the WI 100th Anniversary. The first ever meeting in the UK was at Llanfairpwll, Anglesey on 16th September 1915. Our own history dates back much later to 1954.

President, Rita Preston welcomed members and invited guests to our fantastic new hall with its wonderful views toward The Long Mynd and surrounding countryside.

The commencement of this auspicious occasion was started off by us all singing the WI anthem ‘Jerusalem’. Business commenced to our usual format with news of many past and forthcoming County events for Norbury & District WI.

Special thanks were given to Wendy Oakley and helpers who arranged a visit/walk to Walcott Hall & Grounds in August. It was well attended and thoroughly enjoyed too.

Tonight, there was a change of plan to our listed Speaker. All was not lost though, Carole Dowding ‘Whirly Bird’ agreed to give us a talk on her own experiences of learning to fly a helicopter. Carole described her issues relating to her over protective father; her talk/slide show was funny and enjoyable, a very interesting journey which resulted in Carole gaining her helicopter licence. She is an inspiration to us all.

A party atmosphere soon developed with founder member Doris Roberts cutting the gorgeous Centenary cake (made and crafted by Wendy Oakley). Our many invited guests enjoyed a delicious supper produced by hostesses Dilys Owen, Jayne Godsman & Pauline Phillips, also with help too from committee members alike

Our competition of ‘One White Bloom’ proved to be very popular. Raffle prizes were in abundance and lots of us went home with a prize. Thanks were given to all who made this happy, lively event possible.

Next Meeting is on Thursday, 8th October 7.30pm @ Norbury Village Hall SY9 5DX. Our speaker is: Lesley Yeoward ‘Can you Canape’. Visitors welcome.
