Onny Valley Social Club

Onny Valley Social Club (affectionately known locally as the Over 50s) was formed in 1997 to provide the opportunity for those over 50 to meet and socialise, take part in activities, and go on trips outside the immediate area together. The club is very well supported with members ranging from their 50s to 80s and above, and the wide range of backgrounds and interests is reflected in the variety of talks, activities and trips each year.

We meet in Norbury Village hall on the first Tuesday in each month at 2.30, and our programme includes talks on various subjects, slide shows, demonstrations and skittles, followed by a cup of tea and a chat. For example, in the spring there will be a quiz, a talk on Fire safety in the Home, learning about making Corn Dollies, a skittles match against a similar neighbouring group, and local visits to Powis Castle and Acton Scott Farm Museum. We have a very convivial Christmas Lunch, a New Year party, and we go as a group to the pantomime in Shrewsbury every year – an opportunity to re-live our youth and indulge in unseemly hilarity! Both the regular meetings and special events tend to be very well attended and provide a great opportunity to socialise with people we may not meet day to day, and catch up with their news. Competition at quizzes and skittles matches can be keen, but there is also much laughter!

We have longer outings from April to October with pick up points at Norbury Village Hall and Bowling Green Close in Bishop’s Castle. The trips planned for 2015 so far include Liverpool, Slimbridge Wetlands Centre, Llandudno, the National Memorial Arboretum, Cotswold Lavender and Snowshill Manor, and Blackpool Illuminations. These trips often centre round a particular attraction, but also usually allow time for lunch and browsing in the local museums, galleries and shops. A comfortable coach from a local company provides our transport, and we therefore have no anxieties about a long drive or finding a parking space on arrival. The journey itself can be an opportunity to catch up with others and plan what we intend to visit on arrival.

Membership is only £5 per year, and non-members are very welcome to join the trips, the cost of which depends on the numbers booking to go.
