Once each month, at Norbury Village Hall, the older children of Norbury Primary School and Nursery operate The Brew with a View Café. Our young entrepreneurs prepare and serve a delicious selection of home-made soups, often using produce from the school garden; jacket potatoes, with a variety of fillings; freshly prepared sandwiches and a wide range of home-made cakes and drinks. The café is very well attended by local residents and visitors from further afield, and it provides a valuable meeting place for friends to get together.
For the children, it is a great learning experience that they enjoy very much. They have the opportunity to develop their communication and mathematical skills whilst also providing them with an insight into the world of work. But perhaps the most important aspect is to be able to interact with people of all ages, from their community.
Back at school, pupils keep detailed accounts and use the profits from their business to support a variety of charities and make improvements to their school. Last year’s group generated over £1500 which they decided to spend on a climbing wall. As this amount alone was not enough to purchase the wall, they presented an excellent case to gain additional funding from Barclay’s Bank and the PTA, which was generously given. Charities supported include: African Village Support, Unicef’s Ebola Appeal, McMillan Cancer Relief and Children in Need.
